Malkang City (formerly Malkang County) is a county-level city under the jurisdiction of the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan Province. It is also the capital of the state. The Tibetan language means “a place where the flames flourish” and is extended to “a place of prosperity”. Maerkang was founded on the basis of the four toast bases of Zhuojiki, Songgang, Dangba and Shuoma in the original Jiarong 18 toast, also known as the “four soil regions”.
As of 2016, it covers an area of 6,633 square kilometers and has jurisdiction over 4 towns and 10 townships. In 2012, the total registered population was 56,166. In 2014, it achieved a regional GDP of 200.253 million yuan, an increase of 5.3% over 2013. Among them, the added value of the first industry was 215.02 million yuan, an increase of 5.2%; the added value of the second industry was 31.165 million yuan, an increase of 0.6%; and the added value of the tertiary industry was 1,478.6 million yuan, an increase of 6.3%.
The tourism resources in Malkang can be divided into four categories: Jiarong Tibetan culture, Red Army culture, religious culture, and natural landscape. On July 31, 2018, the Sichuan Provincial Government approved the withdrawal of Malkang City from poor counties.
