The west and north are connected to Jiading District and Baoshan District, and the east and south are adjacent to Jingan District, Changning District, and Minhang District. The total area is 55.53 square kilometers.

The Wusong River (commonly known as the Suzhou River) runs through the whole territory and is an inland waterway linking the Taihu Lake Basin in the west and the Huangpu River and the Yangtze River in the east. At the end of the 19th century, Chinese and foreign businessmen built factories on both sides of the Straits with the convenience of water transportation on the Wusong River, which promoted the development of the domestic economy and gradually became a well-known old industrial area in Shanghai.
