Tongcheng, a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Anhui Province, is managed by Anqing City. Located in the southwest of central Anhui Province, bordering on the Dabie Mountains to the west, and the Yangtze River to the east, between 116°40′～117°09′ east longitude and 30°40′～31°16′ north latitude. Cloth, rice paddies on the southeast plain are crisscrossed, known as the “Seven Provinces Thoroughfare”. It has a subtropical monsoon climate with four distinct seasons, with a total area of 1472 square kilometers. As of 2019, the permanent population of Tongcheng city reached 686,000.
Tongcheng was called “Tongguo” in ancient times, nicknamed “Wendu”. It is the origin of “Tongcheng School”, and it is named for its suitable place for planting tung oil. It is an important transportation hub in southwestern Anhui, and belongs to the frontier position of the gateway city in the southern wing of the Hefei Metropolitan Circle and the Demonstration Zone for Undertaking Industrial Transfer in the Wanjiang Urban Belt. As of 2019, Tongcheng has jurisdiction over 12 towns and 3 streets, and the municipal government is based in Wenchang Street. In July 2019, it was selected as a pilot county (district) of the National Intellectual Property Strong County Project. In January 2020, it was selected as the 2019 National Garden City.
In 2019, Tongcheng achieved a regional GDP of 38.09 billion yuan, an increase of 8% over the previous year at comparable prices; of which, the added value of the primary industry was 3.12 billion yuan, an increase of 2.8%; the added value of the secondary industry was 19.73 billion yuan. An increase of 10.1%; the added value of the tertiary industry was 15.24 billion yuan, an increase of 6%. In the regional GDP, the first, second and tertiary industries accounted for 8.2%, 51.8% and 40% of the added value respectively.
