Karuo District is the jurisdiction of Changdu of the Tibet Autonomous Region. It is located in the east of Tibet. It is located in the Hengduan Mountains and the Sanjiang (Jinsha, Lancang, and Nujiang) basins. Qamdo means “water confluence” in Tibetan. It faces Sichuan Province to the east, Myanmar and Yunnan to the southeast, Linzhi City to the southwest, Nagqu City of Tibet to the northwest, Qinghai Province to the north, and Lhasa, the capital of the Autonomous Region to the west.
Since the reform of the land in the late Qing Dynasty and the resettlement of Qamdo Prefecture, Karuo District has always been the political, economic, cultural, and transportation center of Changdu City, and has been called the “gateway to eastern Tibet.” In November 2014, the State Council approved the approval of the Tibet Autonomous Region to revoke the establishment of prefecture-level Changdu in the Qamdo region, cancel the Qamdo region and Qamdo county, and establish the prefecture-level Changdu. Changdu has established Karuo District, with the former administrative area of Changdu County as the administrative area of Karuo District of Changdu. The People’s Government of Karuo District is located at No. 259, Changdu Middle Road, Chengguan Town.
