Baota District, under the jurisdiction of Yan’an City, Shanxi Province. It is the seat of the Yan’an Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government, and the central city of Yan’an. Located in the northern part of Shanxi Province, in the hilly and gully area in the middle of the Loess Plateau in northern Shaanxi, it is known as the “main area of the Qin region” and “the throat”. The district has a total land area of 3556 square kilometers, a total population of 750,000, of which a registered population of 480,000; it has jurisdiction over 12 towns, 1 township, 5 urban streets, 320 administrative villages, 31 urban communities, and 19 market town communities.
The Baota area was called Yanzhou in ancient times. It belonged to the territory of Yongzhou in the Xia Dynasty. It was under the jurisdiction of Di, Jin, Wei and Qin during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States Period. The Han Dynasty established prefectures. During the Sui and Tang Dynasties, it was called Yanzhou or Yan’an Prefecture. Later, it was renamed Yan’an County. In 1937, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China settled in Yan’an and established Yan’an City as the seat of the government of the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region.
