Hotan is a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Hotan, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. It was separated from Hotan County with the approval of the State Council in September 1983 and was formally established on August 18, 1984. It is the political, economic and cultural center of the whole region.
Hotan City lies on Kunlun in the south and Hanhai on the north. It is located between Kunlun Mountains and the Taklimakan Desert. It is a city at the southern tip of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, 1,500 kilometers away from the capital, Urumqi. The city was established in August 1984, with a total area of 685 square kilometers, governing 4 streets, 2 towns, and 6 townships. The city has 111 administrative villages and 33 community neighborhood committees. In 2016, the total population of Hotan City was 389,749, with ethnic minorities accounting for 88% and Han ethnic groups accounting for 12%. It is composed of 21 ethnic groups including Uyghur, Han, Hui and Kazakh. A multi-ethnic city inhabited by various ethnic groups, it is known as the “Capital of Jade and Stone” and the “Hometown of Carpets”.
